Willemien Hogewind

Willemien Hogewind is a PhD candidate at the Department of Criminal Law and Criminology at the VU University Amsterdam since September 2010. Her PhD research is part of Professor Elies van Sliedregt’s Vidi-project Dealing with Divergence-National Adjudication of International Crimes. Willemien’s research investigates individual criminal liability in international crimes such as genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes combining the scholarship of international criminal law with the learning of criminology on international crimes. The working title of her study is An offense-based approach towards individual liability in international criminal law.

Before joining the VU Willemien worked as a senior associate at the Court of Justice in The Hague for the sector of investigation judges in the department of international crimes. In this position she went several times to Rwanda, Benin and Mali to interview witnesses of international crimes. Prior to this she was a legal and political advisor at the international law section of the Ministry of Defense in The Hague after finishing a two years traineeship at the Ministry of Defense. During the traineeship she worked in different parts of the organization: the Sector of Military Criminal Law within the Directorate of Legal Affairs in The Hague, the Department of Military Criminal Law in the District Office of the Public Prosecutor in Arnhem and the Research Center of the Royal Military Police at Schiphol. Previous to that she worked at the Court of Justice in Utrecht as a clerk of court in criminal law.

Willemien gained a Specialization Degree in Military Law from the University of Amsterdam, an MSc in Criminology & Criminal Justice from Oxford University and an LL.M in Dutch law with a specialization in criminal law from Utrecht University .
